Hello My Friends,

I can't wait for the new semester to start. Only because that means we can get back training. Our classes are going to be in 507 of the field at 830 pm like last semester, but with a full time instruct John Gutta teaching five classes a week.
This should give a continuum of instruction that will allow us to get better faster. Dues will be adjusted up to 100 dollars. Hopefully everyone can either pay their dues by Monday the 23 of Januarty or make other arrangements with me.
I hope to see everyone back up in the room.

Here is a quick Bio for jimmy that I ripped off his blogspot. I am really looking forward to training with Jimmy starting October 1st.

About Me

I'm Jimmy "Frodo" Cerra, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter from Pittsburgh, PA. Randy Jones was my first instructor at the CMU Grappling Club in 2005. My original goals were simply to lose weight & have fun. I quickly exceeded my own expectations and fell in love with competition!

I currently run the martial arts studio, Team Balance Pittsburgh. Eventually the head instructor of Team Balance, Phil Migliarese, promoted me to brown belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I'm also a brown belt in judo, trained many other martial arts such as Muay Thai, and have refereed many tournaments.

I've also fought in many grappling competitions and MMA bouts. While training in Philadelphia, I was a finalist at the 2010 ADCC North American Trials. I owe a big debt of gratitude to Phil Migliarese for the opportunity to train with some of the best grapplers & fighters in the country!

By far, my biggest challenge has been to return to competition after a very serious shoulder injury. I am very thankful to family and friends, my doctors, physical therapists at UPMC Sports Medicine, my teammates at Balance, and to God for helping me through this journey. Pedro Silveira Jiu-Jitsu Camp 2010 (Pejor Academy)

Pedro Silveira Jiu-Jitsu Camp (Pejor Academy) June 2-10 2010
The camp will consist of two training sessions per day at Pejor Academy, conditioning practices on the beach and in the forest, a tour to Cristo Redentor (the big Jesus statue), and visits to beach and famous night time hang outs. Students will be staying in an apartment in front of the beach. There will be transportation to all the events including to and from the airport. The cost is $1500.
The price includes 2 daily meals but the plane ticket is not included in the package.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are Gi with Pedro at 8:30
Tuesday will be No-gi with Pedro at 8:30
Friday will be Gi with Rodrigo at 8:00 PM

Also, remember if you have not paid the drop in fee for Pedro you need to do so before you train, it is 30 dollars and covers all of his classes while he is here.
And if you ask about a class by class drop in, its 30 dollars for 1 class or 30 dollars for all the classes.

Pedro in IC 3/29 - 4/22

Pedro arrived in Chicago in the beginning of March. Pedro had taken some time off to recover from his fight, and when he arrived he started training again. In one of his first practices he injured his back. I communicated with him and we thought that everything would be good to go for Monday, as it started to heal up. Unfortunately, this weekend his injury flared up. Pedro and I discussed it and we came to the conclusion that it would be in everyone's best interest to wait one more week so he can heal up and give us 100%. So we will shift Pedro's four weeks with us back one week. He will start Monday (3/29) and be with us through Thursday (4/22).

Pedro is really excited to get back to his family in Iowa City! He plans to dedicate all of his time to seeing us progress, therefore he will be attending our open mats on the weekends and teaching a lot of private lessons.

The additional one time fee of $30 that allows you to attend as many of Pedro's classes as you like still must be in Monday, March 22.

Pedro’s Drop in and Upcoming tournament schedule

Pedro is going to start teaching Monday March 22 (the first day back from spring break). He will be teaching class four days per week for one month. In order to cover the costs of bringing him up we will be charging a onetime fee of $30. Once paid, you will have access to all of the classes that Pedro instructs. We will start collecting money this Monday, and must be in by March 22.

Just wanted to let everyone know that our regular Saturday class is canceled.
Instead, the Judo team from Iowa State will be coming down there will be a judo seminar in S511 starting at 10 am.
This is a free event, and I encourage everyone to attend.

10:00am to 1:00pm (ish): Nathan Meier will demonstrate fundamental stances, gaits, set-ups, and more. We'll use this in uchi kome and nage komi. We'll end with discussing the right way to approaching rondori and teaching judo and perhaps some light rondori.

1:00-2:00 Break for lunch

2:00-3:30 (ish): Jon Schmitt will show some newaza techniques including but not limited to guard passes with emphasis on grips and maintaining a pin and then how to turn over a turtle and pin/submission options from rear-mount.

3:30 - ???: We will have a competition to simulate a tournament environment for our competitors. If we still want to work out after we can keep sparring or do some King of the Mat.

The patches are in! They are really sharp and we will only be charging
$10 per patch. I will have them with me every practice from now on. We
have a limited quantity so try and pick them up quickly.

Dues will be due Wednesday August 26. For members that are back in
town before that and were away for the summer feel free to start
coming to class before the new semester begins.

For the fall semester we plan on having Pedro in late October until
late November.

On Monday the club will be putting in an order for new patches. They
should arrive within 2 weeks. We will be getting 51 patches and we
will be selling them for $12. These will be large patches for the back
of your gi and feature the new HBJJC logo that Dave made for us.

Also Rodrigo will now be offering private lessons to HBJJC members.

Summer Session News

I hope all of you are enjoying your summer. We had originally said that dues would be due this Monday May 25th. But the Fieldhouse will only be open from 10:30 am to 1:30pm in observance of Memorial Day. So our regular Monday class is canceled and dues will be due on Wednesday May 27th.

Tomorrow, Sunday May 24th Emily Katy and Andy will all be fighting MMA at 7pm at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Last time it was a lot of fun, and I encourage everyone to check it out.

This summer, a lot of us are trying to get in more than one class per day. We usually go from around 11:00am - 1 once or twice a week. If you are interested in joining us feel free to shoot me an email at john-gutta@uiowa.edu with your phone number so that I can put you on the text message list for the extra training.

Schedule for the rest of finals week

We will be having competition matches during this Wednesday's class.
We plan on video taping the matches to look for mistakes and positions to work work on until NAGA. We will not have Rodrigo's gi class on Thursday because of finals week, instead we will have a nogi class.
Rodrigo's class will start again next Thursday 5/21.

NAGA and Summer Session

The end of the semester is quickly approaching. We will be having
classes throughout finals week, keep in mind that the attendance might
be sparse. The summer session will begin and dues will be due Monday,
May 25. Dues will be $70 for students and $90 for non UI students with
no additional fees throughout the semester. We plan on doing patches
and t shirts this summer.

Also, Naga is less than 4 weeks away. I want to get a good group of
people and commit to training hard.

It seems that they have a less than 6 months divisions, which can be a
great opportunity for our new guys to dominate. Also, the less than 2
years division in no gi can be really good for all the 4 stripe white
belts. The gi divisions go by belt, which can also work to our
advantage.

travel/hotel stuff together and train extra hard.

of Thursdays. This is a really fun class I hope everyone gets a chance

Pedro Silveira Jiu-Jitsu Camp (Pejor Academy)

Attached is a link to a poster advertising Pedro's BJJ Camp in Brazil.
The idea behind the camp is to offer to jiu-jitsu students high level
training coupled with immersion in Brazilian culture. The camp will
last ten days and will start the first week of June. In order to offer
the best quality of training and reception, only 6 students will take
part in each Camp. The camp will consist of two training session per
day at Pejor Academy, Conditioning practices on the beach and in the
forest, a tour to Cristo Redentor (the big Jesus statue), and visits
to beach and famous night time hang outs.Students will be staying in
an apartment in front of the beach. There will be transportation to
all the events including to and from the airport. The cost is $1200.
The price 2 daily meals but the plane ticket is not included in the
package.

Pedro has arrived in Iowa City and will be teaching class for the next
four weeks. He will take over classes Mon-Thurs. There will only be
two minor changes in our schedule when Pedro is here. Tuesday will be
a gi class, and Thursday will be a nogi BJJ class not our wrestling
class. Our schedule will go back to normal starting 03/09/09.

Feb 2 Update

Hi Everyone,

Pedro will start teaching class next Monday, February 9th. He will
teach class Monday- Thursday until 03/05/09.

Due to low membership we are canceling Rodrigo's Friday class until
further notice. We have had a significant drop in new and returning
members and do not have the funds to keep having the Friday class.
Hopefully we will get some new members in and will be able to resume
Rodrigo's Friday class later in the semester.

The club will no longer allow any kind of drop in fee to attend our
classes. To attend an HBJJC practice you must have paid your dues for
the semester. Drop in fees are very difficult logistically for the
club officers to handle and they are unfair to members who pay their
dues and cannot attend very many classes.

and will be open to the members of the BJJ club and the Judo club.

We will start having Rodrigo teach class next Friday January 30th.
Tonight, 1/23/09, will be a gi open mat at the usual class time.

Youngster rescues girl from dog

During jiujitsu lessons Tuesday evening, instructor Matt Baker asked 9-year-old Drew Heredia what he would do if put in a certain position he was teaching.
"I'd get on my back and do a choke hold," he said.
It's the same thing Drew did last week when he saved a 12-year-old girl from being mauled by a pit bull. Using a tactic he learned in class, he put the attacking dog in a choke hold and held it for at least 20 minutes until help arrived.
The chokehold Drew learned, called a rear naked chokehold, was taught only briefly, instructor Matt Baker said. Drew had practiced, including at home on his mother, she said.

"It's a move we use with caution, and the reason is because it works," Baker said.

New Semester

The new semester is getting ready to start so we hope you had a good break.
As most of you know Pedro will be in town right away in February to kick off what we hope will be a great semester.
Due to how quick the turn-around will be in getting ready for Pedro we are going to need to charge Pedro's extra fee the same time dues are collected. Dues will be $70 for University of Iowa students only and $90 for non UI students. Pedro's fee will be $30.
For old members dues are to be collected by Wednesday January 21st (please feel free to pay dues before the deadline if you want).
We apologize for any inconvenience this causes but we need to be able to pay for our black belt instruction.
Have a great rest of the week and we hope to see everyone back and ready for what is sure to be a great semester of training.

Hi Everyone,

On Wednesday, October 1 the Hawkeye Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club voted to
become affiliated with Pedro Silveira. Only a few things are going to
change as result of this vote. The club is working on a new logo that
will have Pedro's name in it. Dave Simon has been working very hard on
a new logo and so far it looks awesome. Now that we are affiliated we
also ask that when club members visit other schools or compete that
they let Pedro know (via email/facebook). Pedro can't be with us all
the time and he really likes to be kept in the loop as to what we are
doing, and how everything is going for us.

For the month that Pedro is with us, we will be changing our Tuesday
class to a gi class (the room and time are the same). Starting
tonight 10/07.

Due to the lack of attendance of our Saturday morning class we will be
canceling it until further notice.

Brandon Schroeder has started an affiliate BJJ school in Marion, this
weekend Pedro will be conducting an MMA and NoGi seminar at Brandon's
new school. It is from 1pm-4pm. The regular cost is $50, but current
Hawkeye BJJ Club members get a 50% discount ($25). Everyone is
encouraged to check it out. (carpooling is available)

couple of announcements

This Wednesday 10/1 we will be having a club vote regarding
affiliation. The last time we voted we went from Gracie Barra to
unaffiliated and now we will vote between no affiliation and Pedro's
association. To be eligible to vote you must be a current member (have
fall dues paid), and have been a member of the club for at least one
semester from a previous session. We will discuss and vote in the
beginning of class. Feel free to stop in to vote, even if you can't
stay for class.

Friday and Saturday's classes are canceled. Once a year the aikido
club has a seminar and takes both of the rooms for two days.

To cover the cost of Pedro and Rodrigo for the rest of the semester we
are going to charge a one time fee of $25. This will be due at the
beginning of Pedro's second week here (Monday, October 6). We will
start accepting the drop in fee tomorrow night. No one will be allowed
on the mats without paying this drop in fee after 10/6.

Roman's MMA Adventures

Roman - I just arrived at Bagram. On the plane with me: Urijah Faber,
BJ Penn, Michael Bisping, Carlos Condit, and a few others.

BMK - Kickass. Did you get to talk to them at all?
I'm curious to what Faber would say if you say you train w/Pedro.

Roman - He said Pedro is pretty good, and asked me how long I'd been training. :)

Condit asked me about my work here. BJ didn't say much - I congratulated him on his win over Sherk, told him he made it look easy and he said it's never easy. I asked if they're gonna let him fight GSP, and he said people were talking about it, and we'll see. I asked Bisping if he was visiting British soldiers. He hoped so. When I ran into him again, I told him he's in the wrong part of the country, the Brits are in the south.

Uriah spoke with me the longest, asked about my job and about the area I'm in. He showed me his hand - still swollen. Said it hurt during the fight and I said he didn't show it. He said BJ has the same injury but not as bad.

I just took a long, long chinnook ride to a base closer to my own. There are signs here that the UFC/WEC fighters will be here tomorrow, so I may run into them a third time.

Hey Everyone,

Due to the flooding the Fieldhouse hours are from 7:00am-7:00pm M-F and it will be closed on the weekend. The rooms are pretty well booked but I got us reservations for Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30pm. So this week we will have gi class Tues and Thurs in S507 at 4:30- 6. Due to the hours and the room bookings we will not be able to have Rodrigo on Friday, and there will not be a Saturday class.

Why Aliveness

If you're not familiar with him, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland, Nate Quarry from Team Quest all trained with him in the early days of MMA in the US. They in turn brought the clinch game from their Olympic wrestling, which Matt incorporated into his program.
He was a sparring partner for Lennox Lewis and trained in JKD/Kali for several years before training with Rickson Gracie.

Classes are at 8:30pm -10:00pm on Mondays & Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:30am-12:00pm (S511 FH).
There is additional training (no-gi) on Tuesday and Thursday nights (8:30pm-10:00pm, Rm. S507 FH).
We do have class on Jan 21st!

Room change for Thurs 12/20 NoGi

The fieldhouse is currently cleaning the carpet in S507 (the room we have reserved for nogi) and has closed it until they are finished. Our Thursday NOGI class will be moved to the yoga/pilates room on the first floor of the fieldhouse. We will have class there at the regular time.

Fall 2007 was a great semester for the club. We added a lot of new members, did very well at tournaments, and everyone progressed a ton. Instructors Jose and Jon guided the club in a really good direction giving us a lot of new stuff to work on. The end of the semester is quickly approaching, and I would like to let everyone know about some of the spring semesters events.

The Arnolds: It looks like I got a hold of last years flyer when I was giving out the tournament information, sorry about that. The dates are the same but this time around they are allowing weigh-ins up until the morning you compete. Also all adult divisions will take place on Saturday, and the lowest weight class this year will be 139 for men. They are not going to split up gi and nogi between two days. While I didn’t attend the Arnolds last year, I heard really good things about the expo itself. Tons of top MMA talent will be on hand to sign autographs take pictures etc. This is a link to the expo’s website:

The night after we compete the UFC will be in town. Dan Henderson will be fighting Anderson Silva for the Middleweight championship. Tickets are not on sale yet but when they do become available we need to jump on them. You can expect to pay between 50-150 for the cheaper seats.
I plan on taking a role call on everyone that wants to compete as soon as winter break is finished, so that we can figure out transportation (so please take a look at your test schedules).If we have enough we might be able to charter a bus or something. I think that this is a great opportunity for each member of the club as well as the club as a whole to test itself against some tough competition. It would be amazing if we could bring the team championship to Iowa City. Even if you don’t want to compete this trip will be a lot of fun with the expo, the UFC , and watching the team compete.

C3: the weekend after classes resume, C3 will host a tournament in Gary, Indiana. It is a fairly affordable tournament and it might be a good warm up for some of our veteran competitors as well as an introduction to competition for those who haven’t competed. I haven’t participated in a C3 tournament, but I have heard a lot of good things from other club members who have competed in the past.

A big thank you goes out to all the members who trained this summer.
We had a great time, learned a ton, sweated a ton, and most of all kept up our great safety record. Welcome back to all our returning members and hello to all our new members we have yet to meet!
A few reminders in addition to all the material on our site:

-The fall session officially kicks off on Monday night (August 27th), and we will have our informational meeting on Wednesday night (August 29th).
New members: please try to attend the informational meeting to learn about the club.
Old members: please try to attend this meeting to help new members get a better sense of what we are about.
-See Kim Sullivan, Treasurer as soon as possible about dues.
The fees are the same as previous terms.
-There is an informational fair on Wednesday afternoon.
If a few members could volunteer to run the booth, that would be great.
See Kim for more info.
-See Hasan Al-Mabuk, Vice-President about ordering a gi.
We will probably do a club order with siriusathletic.com and
graciebarrastore.com if there is enough interest.
We will try to get those price lists updated, come to class for more information.
-Contact webmaster if you are not on the email list.
-As always be sure and maintain proper hygiene, this is especially
important with the hot weather.
ALWAYS shower after practice and be sure to wear a clean gi EVERY time, no exceptions.
You will not be allowed to train if your gi is dirty.
-Enough talk, let's train!
